The record

Document: One page: a two-page opening of the 1866 marriage register of St. Michael’s and Zion Lutheran Church, Philadelphia (German Kurrent script, photocopy), headed by the compiler “St. Michael’s & Zion Lutheran Church Marriage Records”.

Language: German

Transcription conventions: on printed forms, pre-printed text is set in roman and handwritten entries in \italic\; wholly handwritten registers and lists are set in roman. Square brackets mark editorial matter: [?] follows an uncertain reading, [illegible] marks unread text, [blank] marks an unfilled field, and bracketed descriptions record stamps, marks, and annotations. Spelling, abbreviation, and capitalisation follow the original; nothing is corrected. On census and register pages that carry many unrelated entries, the page heading and the target household or entry are transcribed in full; the extent of what is and is not transcribed is stated on each page.

Transcriber’s notes

Only the target entry and one related entry are transcribed. The remaining 24 entries are dense Kurrent in a poor photocopy and concern unrelated couples; they are listed by date so a reader knows what the page holds.

Abbreviations: Herz. = Herzogtum (Duchy); a/E. = an der Enz; Kgr. Württbg = Königreich Württemberg.

The entry places George Wesemann’s origin in the Duchy of Brunswick and Fredericka’s in Vaihingen an der Enz, consistent with the 1844 baptism. The date, 29 July 1866, agrees with the family sources. The first witness, Fried. Bauer, is presumably her father (the 1860 census head Frederick Bauer), though the register does not say so.

Lead for the Knoll line: the 2 August entry is a Knoll groom from Marktleuthen, Bavaria, the documented origin of John E. Knoll, with a witness Adam Knoll.
