Translation (English)

1859, no. 1. Father's column blank. Mother: Wilhelmine Justine Caroline Meyer, born at Halle 29 April 1834, daughter of the master tailor Heinrich Christian Ludwig Meyer of Linse and his former, now deceased, first wife Hanne Wilhelmine Sophie née Waßmann. Born 27 January [1859] at noon; baptized 13 February. Son: Wilhelm August Ludwig. Godparents: (1) Ludwig Meyer, master tailor; (2) August Meyer, shoemaker; (3) Ludwig Waßmann, Häusling; the first two of Linse, the last of Halle. Margin: died 6 May 1866 at Stadtoldendorf. Remarks: No. 1 is illegitimate. On this day the journeyman carpenter Wilhelm [A/Ü]ckermann of Stadtoldendorf, well known to me, appeared and, in the presence and with the consent of the mother, declared himself the child's father; the child was legitimated by subsequent marriage (see p. 177, no. 3). Halle, 19 October 1862. Schüdekopf [pastor].

Notes

The godfather's surname reads Waßmann (W, a, ß, m, a, n, n), not Wesemann as Chapter 2 quotes it. "Sophie": probable. The legitimating father: Ackermann probable.

The baptism belongs to the Meyer family of Linse and to the child's dead grandmother's Waßmann kin. The grandmother, Hanne Wilhelmine Sophie née Waßmann, is probably the child baptized at Halle 14 September 1812 (390649, Bild 132), daughter of the Halle shepherd Friederich Wasmann and Louise Krüger, margin "† 1857" (probable, close to confirmed). A Waßmann godfather from Halle is most naturally her kin.

In 1873 the widow of "Häusling Ludwig Waßmann zu Halle" was Caroline née Möller (390653, Bild 19), wife of the cowherd Karl Ludewig Waßmann (390652, Bild 22, 1849). So the 1859 godfather is probably Karl Ludewig Waßmann (probable, close to confirmed), not Heinrich Christian Ludewig Wesemann (unproven, unlikely).

Household keys H-2 and H-6.

Grade: Stated (event, sponsors). Identification of the godfather as Karl Ludewig Waßmann: probable, close to confirmed. As George's father: unproven, unlikely.
