The record
Document: One page of a U.S. customs passenger list (arrival at New York; ship New York, 1860 per the compiler’s caption). Handwritten entries on a printed form. The compiler has added a typed caption at lower right.
Language: English
Transcription conventions: on printed forms, pre-printed text is set in roman and handwritten entries in \italic\; wholly handwritten registers and lists are set in roman. Square brackets mark editorial matter: [?] follows an uncertain reading, [illegible] marks unread text, [blank] marks an unfilled field, and bracketed descriptions record stamps, marks, and annotations. Spelling, abbreviation, and capitalisation follow the original; nothing is corrected. On census and register pages that carry many unrelated entries, the page heading and the target household or entry are transcribed in full; the extent of what is and is not transcribed is stated on each page.
[Printed column heads:] NAMES. | AGE. (YEARS. MONTHS.) | SEX. | OCCUPATION. | The Country to which they severally belong. | The Country of which they intend to become inhabitants. | DIED ON THE VOYAGE.
[Columns 5 and 6 are completed once at the top, “Germany” and “U.S.”, with vertical ditto lines running down the page. Near the foot, “U.S.” is written in column 5 opposite Jul. Kopfer and “Germany” opposite Bert.; the ditto lines stop there. The Months column and the Died on the Voyage column are blank throughout.]

[Typed caption added by the compiler, lower right:] George Wesemann / Passenger List / Ship Name: / New York / 1860
Transcriber’s notes
Line numbers are editorial; the original is unnumbered. This is the only surviving page of the list in the file; the ship name, arrival date, and port come from the compiler’s caption, not from this page.
Line 5, "G. Wesemann, 22, m, Miller", is the target entry. Age 22 fits a birth c. 1838, and "Miller" agrees with the 1865 discharge certificate ("by occupation, when enrolled, a Miller"). Chapter 4 confirms the arrival as 12 March 1860 aboard the ship New York out of Bremen and Southampton, and identifies this line as the only Weseman on the manifest. Chapter 2 corroborates the date against Georg Wilhelm Ehrenfried Wesemann's 24 January 1860 emigration-consent record, a seven-week interval that confirms both records independently and settles George's German place of origin as Thran, Amt Eschershausen.
Many surnames are uncertain in this copy and are marked [?]. The brackets in the Sex column group women and a child (Charlotte Wetzel and Augt., age 8; Bert. and Cunigde. Muller) and may indicate family groups.
Grade: PRIMARY for the list entry; the caption is DERIVED.
