Nicholas Boentgen's death, 1896. Two index records, one event. (a) Register page: ark:/61903/1:1:VKDS-W4L, image ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-XXZQ-WMG ("Philadelphia, Death Registers 1896," p. 80, entry no. 16338). Reading (image): "16338 Nicholas Boentgen, 63 y, [married], died 3 [Feb 1896], physician A. [?] Fran[?]; born Germany; ward 19; 1427 N. 3d St.; buried 9 [Feb]; German Luth[eran] [cemetery]." (b) Certificate: ark:/61903/1:1:J6R3-YX9, image ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-68F7-NYQ (Board of Health Death/Cemetery Returns, Jan–Feb 1896, image 1560 of 1756; index "certificate \# 16338"). Reading: "Return of a Death in the City of Philadelphia, no. 16338. Name of deceased: Nicholas Borntgen [index Boentgen]; white; male; 63 years; married; date of death Feb. 3rd 1896; cause: Hypostatic Pneumonia, contributing to valvular disease of the heart [partly struck-through first word 'Chronic'?]; physician [?] Fran [?], M.D., residence [illegible] Franklin Ave. Occupation: Wood Polisher. Place of birth: Germany. (Father and mother: not given; he was not a minor.) Ward 19. 1427 N. 3rd St. Burial February 9th 1896, German Lutheran Zion's Church Gr[ound]. Undertaker: Chas. Horsch [?] & Sons, 1128 N. 3rd St." STATED (age 63 puts birth about 1832–33, agreeing with 1870 [38] and 1880 [47]). Occupation in 1896 (wood polisher) differs from 1860 (Britannia-ware maker), 1870 (iron foundry) and 1880 (metal turner): a man in the metal and wood trades; noted, not a conflict.

William A. Boentgen's death, 1899 (already in Chapter 4 as 1866–1899; read here on the image for the record). ark:/61903/1:1:J66G-9Z6; image ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6P4S-84J (Death Registers June–July 1899; film 1769849 image 168; "cn 142"). Reading: "Return of a Death … 142. Name: William A. Boentgen; white; male; 33 years; married; June 30th 1899; cause: Pulmonary Tuberculosis; Joseph V. Antill [?], M.D., 2300 N. 5th St. Occupation: Carver [struck/overwritten]; place of birth: Pa.; father and mother: blank (dashes); ward 31; 2008 Cor. Dean [?] St.; burial July 5, 1899, 'Hamb. St. M.E. Vault to German Lutheran'; undertaker Schuyler & Sons [?], 6[?] Drummond [?]." STATED. His parents are not named, so the certificate does not settle F65 by itself; the identity rests on the ages and names in 1870 and 1880 (PROBABLE).

Kate Borntgen, died 4 December 1907: PROBABLE the Catharine, 9, of the 1880 household, and the record names the mother's maiden name. ark:/61903/1:1:JDPK-C2L; image ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DCFQ-P2R (Death Certificates 1907, image 212 of 552; film 1402917; certificate no. 29695). Reading (image): "Record of a Death in Philadelphia, no. 29695. Full name of deceased: Kate Borntgen. Female; white; single. Date of birth 19 Aug 1870 [day read '19th']; date of death Dec 4th 1907, 11:15 P.M.; age 37 years, 3 months, 14 days. Attended July 1 to Dec 4th 1907. Cause: Pulmonary Tuberculosis (5 mos.); contributing Anaemia (2 mos.). Signed Joseph V. Antill [?], M.D., 2300 N. 5th St. Occupation: Trimmer. Place of birth: Phila. Birthplace of father: Germany. Birthplace of mother: Germany. Name of father: [blank]. Maiden name of mother: Louise Hiller [read; 'Hiller' or 'Hillen']. Place of death 1727 [?] N. 3rd St.; ward 19; buried from the same address; burial December 8, 1907, German Lutheran Cemetery; undertaker Frederick A. Horsch [?], 1128 N. 3rd St." STATED for the entry. Tier for the identity: PROBABLE (single woman born in Philadelphia on 19 Aug 1870 would be 9 years old on 2 June 1880, as the 1880 Catharine; the street (N. 3rd) and the burial ground (German Lutheran) match Nicholas's; the mother's first name Louise matches Louisa; no document names Nicholas as her father). If she is the 1880 Catharine, Louisa Boentgen's maiden name is Hiller (PROBABLE; one document, informant not named).

Caroline Boentgen, died 12 July 1862 (ark:/61903/1:1:JKSZ-YY3 and ark:/61903/1:1:VKDF-K8K; two indexings). Index: parents Nicholas and Louisa Boentgen; born 1862; buried 14 July 1862. Not opened; no image read. PROBABLE (index) a first child of the couple, born and died in 1862 (they were in the 16th Ward in June 1860 without a child). Image to save; not downloaded.

Other Boentgen records seen in the same results (not opened; outside the Nicholas–Louisa household; recorded, not pursued): Fred (Fredk., Fred K.) Boentgen, died 11 Nov 1888, born 1854, burial 13 Nov 1888, with wife Mary and children Walter (b. 1883, d. 5 Sep 1887), Mary (d. 19 Apr 1886) and Clara ("Boemgen"); Charles Boentgen with Mamie Givin, a child died 14 Apr 1907; George Boentgen (1890–27 Aug 1891), child of Wm. and Emma (already F-numbered in Chapter 4; buried at Zion, "Brandenburg, Prussia" is a mis-indexed place in one record). Whether Fred (b. 1854) or Charles is a relation of Nicholas: not tested.

Civil War (new, not in Chapter 4): Nicholas Boentgen of the 75th Pennsylvania Infantry. "Pennsylvania, Register of Military Volunteers, 1861–1865": Nicholas Boentgen, enlisted 20 August 1861 at Philadelphia, 3 years, 75th Regiment, Company C, entry no. 3 (ark:/61903/1:1:4Y69-TZW2; digital folder 008192878, image 552; image restricted: "Check Image Availability" not opened). "United States, Civil War and Later Pension Index, 1861–1917": Nicholas Boentgen, Corp., Infantry, 75th, Co. C, pension filed 7 Oct 1879, file name 5845196 (NARA T289; ark:/61903/1:1:NH62-Y3X). Image of the pension card is on fold3 only ("This image is only available on fold3.com"): not opened (H14). "United States, Veterans Administration Pension Payment Cards, 1907–1933": a Nicholas Boentgen entry with a death on 9 March 1922 (not opened; probably the widow's card: Louisa would be 82). PROBABLE for each as the Prussian-born Nicholas (name, Philadelphia enlistment at age about 29, the 1879 filing; no age on the index pages). The 75th Pennsylvania was a German regiment raised in Philadelphia.

Notes

Conflicts noted: none with the working files. The 1896 return calls him a wood polisher; Chapter 4 does not state his trade.
