Voges, Sporleder and Sagebiel Kin

Anne Catharina Voges’s father, the large cottager (Großköther) Christian Voigts of Dielmissen, was alive at her marriage in April 1763. On the sixteenth Sunday after Trinity 1764 the Dielmissen register buried “the wife of Hans Christian Voigts …, Magd[alena?] Anne Kunemann, aged 63”; she was possibly Anne Catharina’s mother. Three Dielmissen grooms, Henrich Christian Voigts (1766), the surgeon Henrich Christian [Voigt?] (1778) and Henrich Christian Voges (1785), were possibly her brothers or kin. Her baptism and her parents’ marriage would have stood in Dielmissen’s first register, which does not survive. At Linse, Hennig Voges, a shoemaker, stood godfather at a baptism of Christoph Brand’s son in 1767; his kinship to Anne Catharina is not stated.

George’s grandmother, Caroline Charlotte Sporleder, was born on 17 May 1782, between eleven and twelve in the morning, and baptized at Linse on 20 May as Marie Caroline Charlotte, daughter of “Lud. Sporleder and Ilse Marie Sagebiel.” Her godparents were Christoph Sporleder of Esperde and “the wife of Heinr. Wäsemann, the middle miller,” Christine Kampen, and a later hand added “+ 1847”. The child of 1782 is probably George’s grandmother, a link that comes close to certainty: the name, the village, her age of 26 in 1809 and her death in 1847 all agree. So the miller’s wife stood godmother to the woman whose daughter would marry her grandson. Her sisters were Dorothee Caroline, born on 31 May and baptized on 1 June 1779 (the entry carries a cross), and Ilse Marie Louise, born on 12 June and baptized on 16 June 1785. The male sponsor at both was “Jo. Heinr. Wasmann, L.,” of the separate Wasmann family. Engel Catharine Sporleder of Linse, who bore a daughter there in January 1810 aged 21 and later married the lodger Johann Heinrich Ludewig Lüd[…], stood godmother with a lodger Ludwig [Lüders?] to Caroline Charlotte’s daughter Justine in 1815; she was possibly Caroline Charlotte’s sister. The neighboring half farmer Johann Heinrich Conrad Sporleder was not her father, and was possibly her brother or kinsman.

Her parents married at Linse on 21 July 1778: “the bachelor Georg Ludewig Sporleder, of Esperde, surviving lawful son of the late Wilh. Sporleder, former full farmer there, as bridegroom, and Miss Ilse Maria Sagebiel, of Linse, surviving lawful daughter of the late Heinrich Harm Sagebiel, former half farmer there”. The couple were probably the parents of the three daughters. “Georg Ludwig Sporleder” died at Linse on 31 August 1803, aged 52 years, 8 months and 5[?] days, probably the groom of 1778. He was probably the Georg Ludewig baptized at Esperde on 10 February 1751 (the day might be the 16th) to Hinrich Wilhelm Sporleder. His burial age points to a birth about 26 December 1750, six or seven weeks before that baptism. Ilse Maria Sporleder, “born Sagebiel, widow of the late half farmer Georg Ludwig Sporleder,” was a godmother at Linse in July 1797, died at Linse on 26 January 1817 at three in the afternoon, of old age, aged “sixty-five [?] years ten months,” and was buried with full ceremony on 30 January. Her age at death points to a birth about March or April 1751, her ages at the baptisms of 1782 and 1785 to 1752 to 1754.

The Sporleders were full farmers at Esperde, the next parish to the west, which kept its own registers. “16 January 1767. The altarist Hinrich Wilh. Sporleder died,” the age written faintly as 44 or 49. He was probably Georg Ludewig’s father and the late full farmer of 1778; an altarist (Altarist) held a church office that a farmer could hold. He was born about 1717 to 1723, before Esperde’s first register of 1725, and his son was about sixteen when he died. An elder son, Hinrich Christoph, was baptized on 13 February 1744 to “Johann Hinrich Wilhelm Sporleder,” probably the same father, and was probably the altarist Heinrich Christoph Sporleder who had children at Esperde in 1771 to 1783 and died in 1787 aged 43. A Heinrich Harm Sporleder, buried at Esperde in February 1791, the entry read both as “the farmer” aged about 50 and as “the mason” aged 53 years 4 months, was possibly another brother. The office of altarist was also held by Johann Christoph Falke, who died in 1785. Esperde had a soldier, later corporal, Johann Christoph Sporleder (1753, 1765, 1767), and a Christoph Sporleder who married Ilse Marie [Falken?] in November 1767; they were possibly one man, and possibly the “Christoph Sporleder of Esperde” who stood godfather at Linse in 1777 and 1782. Hinrich Wilhelm Sporleder’s wife, George’s great-great-grandmother, is not known. The Sporleders of Dohnsen, in Halle parish, from 1713 on, are not shown to be of this family, and an online tree carries Dohnsen Sporleders of 1552 to 1673.

Ilse Maria’s father, Heinrich Harm Sagebiel, half farmer at Linse, died in the dysentery of September 1757. “Henrich Hermann Vagebiel, born at [Linse], a good pious man of Linse … aged 35 less 14 [days],” was buried about 18 September 1757; the Halle clerks of the 1750s wrote the name Vagebiel, and Harm is the short form of Hermann. He was probably George’s great-great-grandfather. His age gives a birth about October 1722, but his baptism is not in the Halle register for 1716 to 1725. His father was one of two Linse men, each possible: Hans Herman Sagebiel (1697 to 1768), or Johan Heinrich Sagebiel, who married Catharina, a daughter of the Linse master miller Johan Knüll, in January 1715 or 1716 and had twins in 1721 with the miller as their grandfather and godfather. Under the second, this line also runs back to the Knüll millers of Linse. Hans Herman Sagebiel and Hermann Christoph Sagebiel (about 1693 to 1769) were possibly his kin. A daughter, Wilhelmina Sophia, was baptized to Henrich Hermann Sagebiel at Linse on 25 November 1754, with no mother or sponsors named. Ilse Maria’s own baptism is not in the legible Halle pages of 1751 to 1757. A collateral, the Linse half farmer Jo. Heinr. Sagebiel, married Catharina Marie Gerlings of Esperde in 1759, who died in childbed in October 1771, and then Catharine Marie Kolenberg of Esperde in 1772; Ilse Marie Sagebiel stood sponsor to their daughters in 1773 and 1774.

Heinrich Harm Sagebiel’s widow, Marie Sophie née Marahrens, married the bachelor Johann Heinrich Wasmann of Tuchtfeld, the retired farmer of the separate Wasmann family met above, at Linse on 10 May 1759, and died at Linse on 22 March 1772 aged 47 years and 20 weeks, “Johann Heinrich Wasmann’s wife”. She was baptized at Halle on 5 November 1724 as Sophia Maria, daughter of Borchardt Meyerarens of Linse, and the baptism’s margin notes her death in 1772, so the child and the wife are almost certainly one woman. Whether she was Ilse Maria’s mother is possible only: no record names Ilse Maria’s mother, and Heinrich Harm may have had an earlier wife. If she was, Borchardt Meyerarens was George’s great-great-great-grandfather, and the Wasmann godfather of the Sporleder daughters was possibly Ilse Maria’s stepfather.

The Wesemanns and the Brands were linked long before they married. The middle miller stood godfather to a child of a Kirchbrak Brand household in 1777, and in 1782 the miller’s wife stood for Caroline Charlotte Sporleder. In June 1805 Justine Marie Küster, “Ludwig Wesemann’s wife,” stood godmother to a Brand child. In 1807 the miller’s daughter Caroline Louise married a Brand. At Johanne Caroline Wilhelmine Brand’s own baptism in 1809 a “Christoph Waßmann” stood godfather. Then, in 1832, a Wesemann son married a Brand daughter, and in 1846 a Wesemann daughter married a Brand son.
