The Brands of Linse, 1630s to 1792
George’s great-grandfather was probably Johann Christoph Brand, half farmer at Linse. He married Anne Catharina Voges (Voigts) at Dielmissen, her parish, on 28 April 1763. The Halle register records “Jo. Christoph Brand of Linse with Anne Cath. Vogts of Dielmissen, married at Dielmissen,” and the Dielmissen register “Johann Christoph Brand, half farmer at Linse, with Anna Catharina Voigts, daughter of the large cottager Christian Voigts”. Her origin at Dielmissen is almost certain, since the two marriage entries and the Linse baptisms agree. Her own parish wrote the family Voigts, the Halle clerk Vogts and the Linse clerk Voges; this book calls her Anne Catharina Voges.
Christoph Brand had been a soldier. On 13 May 1753 “the Wolfenbüttel soldier Johann Christoph Brand at Linse” was named as the father of Anna Catharina, the illegitimate daughter of Catharina Margaretha Allerkamp; the soldier was probably the half farmer of 1763. The girl, entered as Cath. Marie Brand, “whose father is said to be the still living Christoph Brand at Linse,” probably died at Linse on 1 February 1773, aged twenty.
Christoph and Anne Catharina had eleven children at Linse; each was probably theirs, by the father’s name, the hamlet and the mother’s names.

The name Johann Christoph was given three times, each after the death of the child before. Anne Catharina was 48 at the baptism of February 1789, so she was born about 1740 to 1742. A daughter, Hanne Marie Caroline, married on 16 July 1795 as “surviving daughter of the late Johann Christoph Brand, former half farmer at Linse”. Caroline Wecke née Brandes, born at Linse, who died at Thüste on 13 September 1842 aged 75, four days after her husband, the retired farmer Johann Heinrich Wecke, “with whom she had lived united 46 years,” was probably that bride, and possibly the Marie Caroline of 1769, her age two years high.
Christoph Brand died at Linse on 15 December 1792 of a chest illness, aged 60 years, 6 months and 3 weeks. That he was the half farmer is probable: he is the only Christoph Brand of Linse buried in those years, and his daughter’s marriage of 1795 calls him “late”. His age gives a birth about 25 May 1732; the registers do not bear out the birth year of 1730, or the mother Anna Catharina Knüll, that an online tree gives him. His widow stood godmother at Linse in 1805 as “Christ. Brand’s widow”. A living Christoph Brand stood godfather at Linse in 1809, so the name had more than one bearer, and the link between the half farmer of 1792 and the “late Chr. Brand” of 1804 stays probable, not certain.
No entry found names Christoph at his baptism. Two entries may be his, and each is possibly his. On 29 June 1732 a daughter of Franz Brand of Linse was baptized with the name line empty, and “Christoph” with a cross below was later written beside it in a smaller hand. On 13 (or 18) December 1733 a son of Frantz Henrich Brandt of Linse was baptized “Johann [Christoph],” the second name read from its last strokes. His age at death favors 1732.
Christoph’s father was probably Franz Heinrich Brand, half farmer at Linse. At the baptism of Christoph’s daughter Marie Caroline in 1769 the second godparent was “Jo. Jürgen Brand, the child’s paternal uncle” (patruus infantis), and Johann Jürgen was Franz Brand’s son, baptized on 7 November 1736 and married at Hunzen in 1766 as “Frant Brand’s son”. Franz’s daughter Ilse Marie, who married Jo. Christoph Warneke of Hoke on 15 January 1770 as the daughter of “the honourable and worthy Frant Brand, half farmer there,” stood godmother to Christoph’s first child in 1764.
Franz Heinrich Brand was baptized at Halle on 14 March 1705, son of Gerd Brand at Linse, and a later hand wrote in the margin “+ 1775, 27 April”. “Franz Heinr. Brand, a retired farmer,” of Linse died on 27 April 1775 and was buried on the 30th, aged 70 years and 6 weeks, of a gangrenous leg. The baptism and the burial are almost certainly one man. He had been half farmer in 1770 and had handed over the farm by 1775.
He married twice. On 18 October 1726 “Franz Hinrich Brand, bachelor, lawful son of Gerd Brand, half farmer at Linse,” married the youngest daughter of the Linse master miller Johan Knüll; she was probably Ilse Margaretha Knüll, buried on 11 March 1731 aged 31 as “wife of Franz Brand at Linse”. So George’s mother’s line, too, had a miller in it. Their first child, Engel Maria, was baptized in an emergency, died within two hours and was buried on 20 July 1727. A son, Johan Heinrich, baptized on 27 February 1729, was buried that August, and two more infants were buried in 1728 and 1730. Johan Knüll was buried on 24 October 1727, aged 72 years and 11 months. On 25 September 1731, six and a half months after his first wife’s death, “Franz Hinrich Brand, farmer … at Linse,” probably this Franz, married “Miss Anna Marie [surname not read] of Tuchtfeld,” daughter of a late [..]. Anna Marie was probably the mother of the daughter of 1732, the son of 1733, the sons Johann Jürgen (1736), Frantz Heinrich (1739), Hans Hermann (1741) and Johann Hermann (1743), and of Christoph Brand, which would make her George’s great-great-grandmother. Franz Henrich Brand’s wife, whose forename is not written, was buried at Halle on 30 November 1749, aged 42, of a chest fever; she was probably Anna Marie. The Halle church inventory of 1753 names Franz Brandt among the holders of land beside the Linse chapel land, and Franz Henrich Brand among the Linse men who paid rye to the Halle school.
Franz’s father was Gerd Harmen Brand. On 7 June 1687 “Gerd Harmen Brand, son of Barthold Brandes at Linse,” married “Sophia Magdalena Gömans, lawful surviving daughter of the late Hans Göman of Esperde”. Fourteen children were baptized to Gerd Brand at Linse from 1688 to 1710, Frantz Heinrich among them; the third, in 1690, to “Gerd Brand at Linse, son of Barthold Brandes,” which names his father a second time. The groom of 1687 was probably the father of all fourteen. Gerd, son of Barthold Brandes of Linse, baptized at Halle on 7 April 1661, the only Gerd Brand baptized in 1646 to 1672, was probably Gerd Harmen. An archive title of 1684 to 1700, the mining captain von der Schulenburg against his tenant Gerdt Brandt at Linse over rent, possibly names him. In 1726 his son “Johan Hinrich Brand, son of Gerd Brandt,” stood godfather at Linse, and early that year his daughter Anna Marina married Johan Berthold Dröge, half farmer at Brökeln, son of Curd Dröge, in the chapel at Linse; she was probably Anna Maria, baptized on 18 January 1695. The household buried several sons and a son-in-law between 1714 and 1733. Gerd was alive at Franz’s marriage in 1726. On 21 January 1751 “Gerhard Brandes’s widow, well advanced in years, from Linse” was buried at Halle; she was probably Sophia Magdalena Göman, so Gerd possibly died in 1735 to 1741, years for which no Halle burial book survives. An online tree that quotes the Halle register has the Göman family of Esperde marrying into the Wasmann house at Dohnsen in 1657; the Göman bride of 1657 was possibly kin to Sophia Magdalena.
Gerd’s father, Barthold Brand of Linse, had children baptized at Halle from 1654 to 1668: Maria (1654, possibly at Linse), Catharina (1655), Henrich (1657), a daughter (1660), Gerd (1661), Catharina (1664, baptized in an emergency), Dorothea (1666) and Margaretha (1668). One Barthold was probably the father of them all. His daughter Anna Dorothea[?] was buried in 1686 or 1687 aged 28. “Barthold Brand of Linse’s wife, aged 63,” was buried on 29 April 1694, and “Barthold Brand of Linse, aged 80,” on 3 May 1698, so he was born about 1618. His marriage has not been found.
Brands lived at Linse about twenty years before Barthold’s birth. “Tonnies Brand at Linse” had a son Hermann baptized at Halle on Easter Monday, 9 April 1599. A Tonnies Brand “at Tuchtfeld” was a sponsor in April 1596, Tonnies stood sponsor at Linse in February 1600, and his wife was a godmother at Linse in 1607. No record names Barthold’s father, and Barthold’s own baptism would fall in a gap in the Halle book after 1625. Tonnies Brand was possibly the generation above Barthold.
