The record

Document: One page of the 1860 U.S. Census, Schedule 1 (Free Inhabitants), Eleventh Ward, Philadelphia. Handwritten entries; the Bauer household is on lines 1–6.

Language: English

Transcription conventions: on printed forms, pre-printed text is set in roman and handwritten entries in \italic\; wholly handwritten registers and lists are set in roman. Square brackets mark editorial matter: [?] follows an uncertain reading, [illegible] marks unread text, [blank] marks an unfilled field, and bracketed descriptions record stamps, marks, and annotations. Spelling, abbreviation, and capitalisation follow the original; nothing is corrected. On census and register pages that carry many unrelated entries, the page heading and the target household or entry are transcribed in full; the extent of what is and is not transcribed is stated on each page.

Transcriber’s notes

This confirms the attribution in the filename: Frederick and Christiana Bauer with Fredericka (16), Frederick (13), Caroline (11), and Sophia (5). Fredericka’s age of 16 fits her May 1844 baptism.

Frederick’s age reads 43; Jacob Friedrich Bauer was born c. 1816 (the 1880 census gives 64), so 43 or 44 is expected in July 1860. The final digit is uncertain.

Birthplace is spelled “Wittenberg” for Württemberg; Sophia is the first child born in Pennsylvania, placing the family’s arrival between c. 1849 (Caroline’s birth) and c. 1855.

Grade: PRIMARY.
