Transcription conventions: on printed forms, pre-printed text is set in roman and handwritten entries in \italic\; wholly handwritten registers and lists are set in roman. Square brackets mark editorial matter: [?] follows an uncertain reading, [illegible] marks unread text, [blank] marks an unfilled field, and bracketed descriptions record stamps, marks, and annotations. Spelling, abbreviation, and capitalisation follow the original; nothing is corrected. On census and register pages that carry many unrelated entries, the page heading and the target household or entry are transcribed in full; the extent of what is and is not transcribed is stated on each page.

Transcriber’s notes
The card records only a widow’s application (no. 633,000) filed 29 April 1896, three months after George’s death on 21 January 1896. No invalid (soldier’s) application appears. The widow would be Fredericka. Law “J” likely denotes the Act of 27 June 1890; this is an interpretation, not stated on the card.
“Additional services: G 15 N. J. Inf.” is a second unit, Company G, 15th New Jersey Infantry, not mentioned on the 1865 discharge certificate. Both the pension file (Widow application 633,000) and the 15th N.J. service record should be ordered from NARA; the file is likely to hold the marriage proof and Fredericka’s affidavits.
This card agrees with the discharge certificate (2nd New Jersey, Co. G) against the 1890 veterans index (“2 New York Inf”).
Grade: PRIMARY (index card); page 2 is DERIVED metadata.
