The record

Document: One page of the 1870 U.S. Census, Schedule 1 (Inhabitants), Philadelphia, 61st District. Handwritten entries; the Wesemann household is on lines 9–12. The ink is faint.

Language: English

Transcription conventions: on printed forms, pre-printed text is set in roman and handwritten entries in \italic\; wholly handwritten registers and lists are set in roman. Square brackets mark editorial matter: [?] follows an uncertain reading, [illegible] marks unread text, [blank] marks an unfilled field, and bracketed descriptions record stamps, marks, and annotations. Spelling, abbreviation, and capitalisation follow the original; nothing is corrected. On census and register pages that carry many unrelated entries, the page heading and the target household or entry are transcribed in full; the extent of what is and is not transcribed is stated on each page.

Transcriber’s notes

The surname is written “Wiseman”. Identification rests on the household composition: George (Brunswick), Fredericka (Württemberg), and children Willie and Emma, matching the 1880 census and the family Bible order. Grade as PRIMARY with the surname variant noted.

George’s age reads 31 (he was about 32 in July 1870); the column is faint. The occupation matches the individual report’s “Grocer”. The dwelling and family numbers and the personal-estate figure are uncertain.

The page number and the enumerator’s name are uncertain readings.
