English

No. 8. Linse, 8 November 1781. The journeyman Johann Christoph Wasmann of Linse, legitimate son of the late Heinrich Harm Wasmann, former hereditary juror (Erbschöffe) there, and the maiden Christine Henriette Meier of Esperde-Oldendorf, legitimate daughter of Hans Erich Meier, hereditary juror there. (Proclaimed on the 20th and 21st Sundays after Trinity.)

Notes

> This is the most consequential of the four marriage entries for the paternity question. It names a son of Heinrich Harm Wasmann — the man buried at Linse on 24 April 1768, aged 56, born at Bredenkamp in 1712, and the project's leading candidate for the father of the Linse miller Johann Heinrich. > > It also gives Heinrich Harm an occupation the burial entry could not: Erbschöppert, the clerk's form of Erbschöffe, hereditary juror at Linse. Not a milling title. That cuts against, without ruling out, the reading that the mill passed to his sons; a man could hold a village office and a mill lease at once, and the occupational classifier this project applies from 1775 forward does not run backwards into 1768. > > Johann Christoph Wasmann, a Geselle in 1781, is a brother-candidate for the miller Johann Heinrich. If both are sons of Heinrich Harm, Chapter 1's paternity chain gains a sibling, not just a father. Grading: stated that Johann Christoph is Heinrich Harm's son; unproven that Johann Heinrich the miller is. > > Re-checked against the higher-resolution scan: reading confirmed, no material change from the earlier transcription.
