Kirchenbuch 1845–1868 · Revised transcription of the four Brand-surname entries

A bookkeeping problem to resolve first

The Finding 4 image files are named Page166. The working document places that finding at Bild 116, printed page 289. This register has 151 images, so 166 cannot be an Archion image number, and 289 is not a printed page that would carry the label 166. Either the filenames are a slip for 116, or these crops come from somewhere other than the entry the document describes. Everything in the Finding 4 section below is transcribed from the images as supplied; the citation needs checking before it is used.

Finding 4 — entry 6, marriages, 1867 (image files labelled Page166)

The earlier document treats this entry as a lost cause: continuous prose across the page, largely illegible, with only “genannt Brand” recoverable at the close. The image shows nothing of the kind. It is a normal five-column entry in a clear, late hand, and it reads almost end to end.

Translation. Groom: Godehardt, Friedrich August Robert, born at Halle 14 October 1838, bachelor, sergeant in the ducal hussar regiment at Braunschweig, legitimate son of the postal clerk (Postexpedient) Herrmann Christian Moritz Godehardt at Halle and his wife Marie Karoline Georgine, née Brand. Bride: [Nauhaus], Auguste Wilhelmine Luise, born at Wolfenbüttel 22 July 1835, maiden, legitimate daughter of the master gunsmith and nailsmith Johann Friedrich Wilhelm [Nauhaus] of Wolfenbüttel and his wife Anna Dorothea Elisabeth Henriette, née [Hälmes]. Banns 6 and 13 October; married [20] October in the church at Halle.

Changed from the earlier pass. Everything. The entry is columnar, not prose. The phrase is geborene Brand, not “genannt Brand,” and it attaches to the groom’s mother, not the bride. There is no postmaster named Gottfried Ludwig of Wolfenbüttel; the Wolfenbüttel man is the bride’s father, a smith. The stray date “22 July 1835” is the bride’s birth, not an anomaly. The groom’s surname is Godehardt, not “Gottlieb[en?].”

Why this entry matters. Marie Karoline Georgine Brand married a Postexpedient — a salaried postal official — and her son went into the ducal hussars. Together with the Großköther household in Finding 3, that is a second Halle Brand line in the parish’s professional and landholding stratum rather than among the Häuslinge. Given the groom’s birth in 1838 at Halle, his mother married there in the 1830s, which places her marriage record in register 390651.
