English translation: 18. Father: Waßmann (underlined in the original), Wilhelm Johann Friedrich, cottager (Brinksitzer) and linen-weaver at Kemnade. Mother: Hanne Caroline Christiane, née Schwar[z]lose(?), born at Hehlen on 24 August 1814. The names are properly documented. Birth: the fifteenth of August, three o’clock in the morning. Baptism: the thirty-first of August. Child: (daughter) Luise Christiane Wilhelmine Caroline. Godparents: 1. Henriette Christiane Auguste Heineken(?), maidservant at Kemnade; 2. Luise Johanne Friederike Benneke(?), maidservant at Kemnade; 3. Caroline Friederike Luise Schröder(?), maidservant at Kemnade. All still unmarried.

> Note: the mother’s middle name is Caroline here and Dorothea in the 1843 entry for the same household. The birth date and birthplace, stated outright in this entry, are what tie the two together. > > Note: all three godparents are maidservants at Kemnade and none is kin. This household drew its sponsors from the village’s servant population, where the millers at Thran drew theirs from Linse family and the trade network. The contrast is worth keeping when the two surnames are compared in Chapter 10.
