Jeremiah and Kate Hanlon of Ahadallane, 1857 to 1915

Jeremiah Hanlon married Kate Buckley at Donaghmore on 12 March 1857. The witnesses were Patrick Hanlon and Daniel Buckley. Patrick was not one of Denis and Johanna’s children born in 1812 to 1817. He may have been a cousin, or a son born in 1809 to 1811, but no record says which. Two weeks later, on 26 March, Patrick Callaghan married Johanna Hanlon on the same page, with Patrick Regan and Timothy Lyons as witnesses. No record shows that the Hanlons and Buckleys were related by blood.

Their first son was born less than a year after the wedding. The family lived at Rathcoola in 1864 and 1867 and at Ahadallane from 1869.

Daniel, the future emigrant, was baptized on 13 December 1859. The register enters him as “Danl,” son of “Jery Hanlan” and “Catherine Buckly,” with Patrick Coakley and Ellen Lucey as sponsors. Johanna was entered to “Terry Hanlan” and Catherine Buckley, and it is not known whether she lived. Jeremiah’s sponsors were Jerry Hanlan and Honora Buckley. His father registered his birth at Rathcoola, in the Clonmoyle registrar’s district, on 28 June 1864. Mary, “of Rathcoola,” had Patrick Buckley and Hannah Hanlon as sponsors, and Patrick had Timothy Healy and Kate Linehan. A second entry for Patrick, of March 1870, is struck through as a duplicate. Hanora, “of Ahadallane,” had a sponsor whose name is read as Brenton, with Mary Connor. She was probably the last child baptized to the couple at Donaghmore before March 1881.

Jeremiah reported Patrick’s birth to the civil registrar as 29 April 1869 and Hanora’s as 26 January 1872, seven and three weeks after their baptisms, which are taken as right. One reading is that a father who registered late gave a later date to stay within the time the law allowed, but no record says why.

A Catherine Hanlon of “[Shanavohee],” a single woman and the daughter of Jeremiah Hanlon, a farmer then living, married Thomas Roche, a farmer of [Banteer] and the son of Daniel Roche, on 1 March 1881. She signed “Kate Hanlon”. She was possibly a daughter of Jeremiah and Kate. No child of theirs is known between Daniel, in December 1859, and Johanna, in March 1862, and Jeremiah of Ahadallane was a living farmer in 1881.

In 1901 the census found one Hanlon household in Ahadallane, in the Firmount district. Jeremiah, 80, a farmer, headed it, with his wife, Kate, 70, their son Jeremiah, 33, their daughter Norah, 26, and a servant, John Murphy, 25. All four Hanlons could read and write, in Irish and in English. Norah was probably Hanora of 1872, since the ages in this return run low. By age, parish and townland, Jeremiah and Kate were probably the couple who married in 1857 and the parents of Daniel in Philadelphia. Daniel’s death certificate names his parents as Jerry Hanlon and Catherine Buckley, and so does his memorial. No single Irish record says both things.

Jeremiah died at Ahadallane on 17 September 1901, aged 80, five and a half months after the census. The certificate gives the cause as “probably cardiac weakness and debility,” with no doctor in attendance. A Jeremiah Hanlon of Ahadallane, probably his son, was with him and registered the death on 23 September, in the registrar’s district read as Dripsey, in the Cork Union.

Jeremiah junior stayed on the farm. On 11 February 1902 he married Ellen Hoare at the Roman Catholic chapel of Burnfort, in the Kilshannig registrar’s district. Both were single and of full age. He was a farmer of Ahadallane, the son of Jeremiah Hanlon, farmer, deceased. Ellen, a farmer of Lissard, was the daughter of James Hoare, a farmer then living. Timothy C. Buckley, the parish priest, married them, and the witnesses were David Buckley and Ellen Looney. The father’s death by February 1902 matches the death of September 1901 and ties the 1857 marriage to the 1901 household.

In 1911 Kate, 78 and a widow, lived in her son’s house as “Mother.” She could read and write, in English and Irish. Jeremiah, 45, was a farmer, and Ellen, 34, had been married nine years and had borne seven children, all living. John Murphy, 40, was a farm laborer. In 1926, at “Ahadillane,” Jeremiah was 60 and Ellen 49, with five children at home. Kate, who would have been about 93, was no longer in the household.

These births are worked out from the children’s ages in 1911 and 1926.

Three Buckley households near the Hanlons may have been Kate’s kin, but no record ties them to her: Michael and Mary Buckley, both 60 in 1901; Margaret Buckley, a widow of 66, with Daniel and Julia; and Denis J. C. Buckley, 39 in 1911, with his mother-in-law, Mary, 86.

Where and when Kate died is not known. A Catherine Hanlon, 86, a farmer’s widow, died at Ballygriffin on 27 November 1915 of bronchitis and heart failure, after eight days’ illness and with no doctor in attendance. Her daughter Nora Roche was with her and gave the information, and the death was registered on 10 December in the Rahan registrar’s district. The register does not name her husband. This woman is possibly Kate. In 1911 Ballygriffin held the household of Richard Roche, 47, a farmer married seven years, with his wife, Nora, 38, and their children Mary, 7, John, 6, Catherine, 4, and Ellen, 1. In 1901 Richard, 33 and single, had lived there with John Roche, 75. Nora Roche of 1911 was probably the informant of 1915. A widow who moved from her son’s house to a married daughter after April 1911 would fit, and Ballygriffin lay in the Mallow registration district, as did Kilshannig, where Jeremiah junior married in 1902. Against it, Ballygriffin lies about 18 or 19 kilometers north-east of Ahadallane, probably in Monanimy civil parish, the barony of Fermoy and the Mallow union, and nothing in the entry names a Buckley. Her age points to a birth about 1829, a little before Kate’s census ages. Four other Catherine Hanlons who died in County Cork between 1920 and 1927 were not Kate: two were single women, one was a married woman of another townland, and one had a son, Cornelius, whom Kate did not have.
