Johann Wilhelm von Campe and the Brewers of Salzhemmendorf
Her father, Johann Wilhelm von Campe, was a citizen and brewer of Salzhemmendorf. He was probably the son baptized there to Jost von Campen in August 1717, on a day between the 1st and the 10th. A “Joh. Wilhelm” born on 17 March 1718 and baptized on 20 March to a Jost whose surname cannot be read is possibly he instead. He stood godfather to his first grandson in January 1772 and died that June, on the 11th, and was buried on the 14th, his age left blank. Five days later the family lost Christine’s brother, August Conrad, aged 8 years and 7 months. His widow later followed her daughter to Linse.
The von Campens had brewed at Salzhemmendorf for generations. The head-tax census of 1689 lists there Jost von Campen, brewer, aged 54, with his wife Catrina Fricken and children including Jobst, aged 19. The town’s name index has burials of a Jost aged 82 in 1715 and of a Jost aged 80½ in 1750, which shows two men of the name. The younger was possibly Christine’s grandfather and the brewer of 1689 her great-grandfather. The same index has von Campen baptisms of 1661, 1668, 1671 and 1680 that fit the brewer’s children of 1689 (Ilsabey, 26; Jobst, 19; Dorothea, 18; and Margreta, 8) within a year or two, probably the same children. It also records the burial of a Frantz von Campen in 1674, aged 94; that he was the brewer’s father is a theory resting on the name and the place.
