The Württemberg Ancestors, about 1670 to 1843
Fredericka’s forebears came from two groups of families. The Bauers, Raus, Würths and Heins lived at Vaihingen an der Enz and the village of Enzweihingen, and at Roßwag and Möglingen nearby; the Raus came earlier from Großsachsenheim and the Würths from Oberstenfeld. Through her grandmother Friederika Büchele came a second group: the Bücheles, Steins, Hauts and Knauppins. A compiled family report in the family’s papers places the older Bücheles, Hauts and Knauppins at Waiblingen and Korb. It places the Steins and Schwartzes at Wiernsheim and Wimsheim, in the Neckar district (Neckarkreis) of Württemberg. Most of these generations have been read in the church registers themselves. The Büchele, Knauppin, Stein, Schwartz, Hautin and Haut generations above Friederika Büchele’s parents rest on the compiled report alone. They may be right, but no register confirms them, and they are possible only.
The Hauts and Bücheles of the compiled report
The report reaches back to Han Jerg Haut, born about 1670 at Waiblingen, the earliest ancestor on Fredericka’s side of the family whose birth it dates. It names his father, Han Jerg Haut the elder, without dates, and his wife Lucia, also born about 1670. It records a second marriage for him, to Catharina Heydwagin, at Korb on 22 February 1698. His son Jerry Haut was born about 1690 at Waiblingen, and Jerry’s daughter Catharina Hautin about 1705 in Württemberg. On 1 August 1725, at Korb, she married Elias Büchele, born at Waiblingen in 1700, the son of an Elias Büchele born there about 1680.
Their son, Johann Elias Büchele, and his wife, Maria Catharina Knauppin, were both born at Waiblingen in 1725, by the report, and he died on 2 November 1807. The report gives them six children: Johann Georg (born 3 May 1743), Dorothea (2 March 1756), Jacob Elias (14 March 1760), Anna Martha (4 September 1762), Jeremias (12 December 1763) and Jacob Frederich. On the Stein side it names Johann Philipp Stein and Catharina Johanna Schwartz, both born about 1740 at Wiernsheim. Their daughter Johanna Philippina Stein was born there on 30 June 1764. Her sister, Magdalena Charlotte Stein, was born at Wiernsheim on 8 December 1766 and died at Nürtingen, in the district of Esslingen, on 16 October 1841. All of this is possible only.
Whether the report’s older Bücheles are really Fredericka’s forebears turns on one man: Friederika Büchele’s father, the shepherd Elias Büchele. The report calls him Jacob Elias and has him born at Waiblingen on 14 March 1760. No baptism of that day is known at Waiblingen or Korb. On that very day, though, a boy was born and baptized at Enzweihingen: “Elias Jacob,” son of Johann(?) Büchele and Maria Catharina. The day and the mother’s first name fit the report, but the place does not, and the entry gives neither the mother’s surname nor the father’s trade. A Johannes Büchele, a citizen (Bürger) and, by a doubtful reading, a farmer, died at Enzweihingen on 2 November 1807, aged 76, the day the report gives for Johann Elias Büchele’s death. He was probably the father of 1760. Indexes list three more Büchele children baptized at Enzweihingen in those years. They are Johann Friderich (born 9 January 1754), Maria Dorothea (2 March 1756, the report’s day for Dorothea) and Jacob Friderich (18 October 1758). Their father is written Johannes or Elias and their mother Maria Catharina, once with the surname Wacker rather than Knauppin. They may all be one family, that of a Johann Elias Büchele. The shepherd’s own marriage points the same way, since it names his father as a shepherd at Enzweihingen. So the shepherd may be the Enzweihingen boy of 1760. But the baptism names no trade and no later place, nothing ties the two together, and the generations above him remain possible.
The Raus and Heins of Enzweihingen
The Heins were farmers at Enzweihingen. Johann Christoph Hein, son of the late Johann Wendel Hein, married Catharina Barbara, daughter of the widower Johann Jacob Kuhhirt(?), at Enzweihingen on 29 April 1755(?). The word read as his surname probably names his trade instead: a cowherd (Kuhhirt). Johann Christoph, born about 1729, was a citizen and farmer and a member of the village court. He died at Enzweihingen on 27 April 1803, aged 74. His daughter Catharina Barbara was born on 18(?) January 1756 and baptized on 19 January.
Johann Georg Rau, a butcher, was born at Großsachsenheim on 12 December 1742, the son of Hieronymus Rau, a butcher there, and Anna Barbara [Zielmännin?]. That comes from the Enzweihingen family register (Familienregister), the parish’s book of households; his baptism itself has not been found. On 21 February 1775 he married Catharina Barbara Hein at Enzweihingen. He died on 3 October 1794, aged 51 years, 9 months and 3 weeks. On 5 May 1795 his widow married a widower, Johann Martin Ziegler (1761 to 1810). Their three children all died by 1801. Catharina Barbara died on 9 April 1813, entered as the widow of Johann Georg Rau.
Johann Georg and Catharina Barbara had eight children, all baptized at Enzweihingen.
| Child | Birth | Death | Married |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catharina Margaretha | 16 November 1775 | ||
| Catharina Barbara | 1777 | ||
| Johann Wendel | 25 January 1781 | 17 April 1832 | Friederika Büchele, 8 November 1807 |
| Johann Christoph | 26 April 1784 | 1 April 1857 | 1810 |
| Anna Margaretha (the first name may read Johanna) | probably 29 June 1787; baptized the same day | young | |
| Anna Catharina | 1 September 1788; baptized 3 September | 5 September 1788, aged four days | |
| Johann Georg | 6 October 1789 | aged about four weeks | |
| Elisabetha Catharina | 1793 |
Johann Christoph had six children of his own. In November 1787 an Anna Catharina, child of a Johann Georg “Rauer,” died at Enzweihingen aged about eighteen weeks. She possibly belonged to this household too, but the surname differs and nothing ties her to it.
Johann Wendel Rau, Christina’s father, became a citizen and farmer at Enzweihingen like his grandfather Christoph Hein. His bride, Friederika Büchele, came from Hessigheim.
Friederika Büchele of Hessigheim
Friederika Büchele was born at Hessigheim, in the Ludwigsburg district, at three in the morning on 27 November 1787 and baptized the same day, the daughter of Elias Büchele and Philippina Stein. The Hessigheim family register lists the shepherd Elias Büchele and Johanna Philippina Stein with children born from August 1785 to 1790, Friederika among them. The compiled report names three others: Elisabetha Catharina (9 August 1786), Jacob Friederich (15 March 1789) and Johanna (4 February 1790), possible only. It gives Elias’s death as before 1805, also possible only.
Her parents were probably the couple who married at Wimsheim on 23 November 1784. The groom was Elias Büchele, a single shepherd, son of Elias Büchele, citizen and shepherd at Enzweihingen. The bride was Johanna Philippina Stein (written “Johanna Filippina”), single, daughter of Filipp Stein, forest servant and hunter to a baron at Obermönsheim. They married under a dispensation of 20 November for minority and for the banns that had not been read. The names and the trade match the Hessigheim household, three years before Friederika’s birth.
The Friederika Büchele who married Johann Wendel Rau was almost certainly this Hessigheim child. Her death entry gives the same birthplace and day and her mother’s maiden name, Stein, and her family page at Enzweihingen gives the same day. She died at Vaihingen on 6 September 1845, a widow, fifteen months after her granddaughter Fredericka was born.
The Würths of Möglingen
On 15 June 1756 Johann Heinrich Würth (the name is also written Wirth), a citizen and wagoner, married Maria Magdalena Fink at Möglingen. The entry names his father as Heinrich Würth, citizen and vintner at Oberstenfeld, and hers as Johannes Fink, citizen and vintner at Möglingen. Johann Heinrich was probably the son born at Oberstenfeld on 2 October 1728 to Heinrich Würth and Rosina Catharina Unkrauf, who had married there on 1 August 1713. A Johann Heinrich Würth, citizen and vintner, buried at Oberstenfeld on 6 February 1765, aged 70, was probably that bridegroom of 1713. Maria Magdalena was probably the girl baptized at Möglingen in October 1736 to Johannes Fink and his wife, Anna Maria. The couple had nine children at Möglingen.
| Child | Birth | Death | Married |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christina | 17 April 1757 | two days later | |
| Anna Catharina | 17 May 1758 | 18 September 1771, of consumption, aged 13 | |
| Johannes | late 1759 | ||
| Johann Michael | 13 January 1765 | probably 12 March 1794, of consumption, aged 29 | |
| Johann Heinrich | 4 November 1767 | probably August 1793, of consumption, aged 24 | probably unmarried |
| Johann Georg | 16 April 1770 | 25 May 1844 | Christiane Friederike [Ott], 17 July 1792 |
| Maria Magdalena | baptized 19 December 1772 | 1776 | |
| Anna Maria | early June 1775 | ||
| Rosina Barbara | possibly 10 September 1777; baptized 18 September | 16 September 1836 | Michael Bauer, 27 November 1811 |
Michael Würth, a wagoner like his father, died in March 1794, and a single son of the late wagoner, aged 24, in August 1793. Both burials call their father “the late” Heinrich Würth, so Johann Heinrich had probably died by August 1793; when is not known. His son Johann Georg also became a wagoner, and his family sheet names both his parents.
The Bauers of Roßwag and Vaihingen
Michael Bauer, Fredericka’s grandfather, was baptized at Roßwag on 17 March 1780, the son of Johann Michael Bauer and Margaretha Scheible. He became a shoemaker at Vaihingen. Rosina Barbara Würth, the youngest of the wagoner’s children, had come to Möglingen in 1809 as a maidservant from [Augsburg]. On 13 March 1811 twin daughters, Barbara and Johanna, were born at Möglingen to Rosina Würth, unmarried. Barbara died on 26 March and Johanna on 10 April. Their mother was probably Rosina Barbara, since a note on her family page matches the two entries.
Eight months later, on 27 November 1811, Michael Bauer married Rosina Barbara Würth at Möglingen. The entry calls him the son of the late Johann Michael Bauer, vine-grower at Roßwag, and her the daughter of the late Heinrich Würth, citizen and wagoner at Möglingen. They had two children: Rosina Barbara, born on 12 August 1812, and Jacob Friedrich, born on 16 March 1816. Michael died of pneumonia on 1 October 1825, aged 45 years, 6 months and 14 days, and Rosina Barbara on 16 September 1836. Their daughter, Jacob Friedrich’s only surviving sister, married a tailor, Gottlieb Friedrich [Jerger?], on 12 August 1838, and died in August 1868.
