Appreciation Award
[Photograph: an older man with dark hair and a mustache, wearing a dark suit, white shirt and dark tie (left), and a younger man with close-cropped hair in an Army uniform with a name tag (right). Together they hold up a copy of the Mayfair News and a framed certificate.]
[Visible in photograph – newspaper held up: banner headline “Mayfair Merchants Sponsor Sidewalk Art Exhibition”; nameplate “MAYFAIR NEWS”; smaller text illegible.]
[Visible in photograph – framed certificate: heading “Certificate of Appreciation” with a Liberty Bell and ribbon emblem; the body text in script is too small and blurred to read reliably; possible reading of the opening words: “In Recognition of Your Outstanding Contribution to the Success of the United States Army Recruiting …” [?]; a signature at lower left and lower right, illegible.]
[Soldier's uniform name tag in photograph: “HASERICK” [?] (blurred).]
A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to the editor of the Mayfair News, for outstanding support to the U. S. Army Recruiting Service. Accepting the award from S/Sgt. H. F. Haserick, Local Army Recruiter, is Mr. William Branchide, editor. The Mayfair News is one of the five papers published by the News Gleaner Publications.
Folded-over top-left corner (showing the reverse/adjacent page, upside down): headline fragment “Bro[…]” and date-line fragment “[…]EMBER 10,” (preceding letter partly torn, possibly “V”, i.e. [NO]VEMBER 10 [?]); year not visible.
Fragments of unrelated adjacent articles visible at the edges and bottom are not transcribed: left column (a story mentioning “1966”, “Ox-[ford?]”, “Mrs.”, “Hos-[pital]”), right column headline “Hal[…] / Par[…]”, and headlines below the photo “Child Presents” and “Boy Scouts Plan Dinner”, plus a column mentioning “the youngest Young Republican” and “The Democrats would do …”.
Transcriber's Notes
No publication date is printed with the article itself; the only date fragment is on the folded-over corner (“[…]EMBER 10,”), and a neighboring column fragment mentions “1966”.
Caption names (William Branchide; S/Sgt. H. F. Haserick) are printed clearly.
The certificate text in the photograph is largely illegible at the halftone resolution; the partial reading given is uncertain.
