The record
Context: an excursion train (a "Business Men's excursion" from the coal region to New York) collided with a local train near West Dunellen / Bound Brook, New Jersey, on the Lehigh Valley line on Monday, 9 January 1899. Many passengers were killed. The train that left the region at 7:49 a.m. carried mostly people from Mt. Carmel, Shamokin and nearby towns, with a few from Shenandoah.
Relevant paragraph:
"It is feared that one Shenandoah resident was among the killed in the wreck. Three women are reported as unidentified in the list of victims. Mrs. Charles Parrish, of West Centre street, left town on the 7:49 a. m. L. V. train yesterday to visit her daughter in Jersey City. Nothing has been heard from her since. Her son, Charles, telegraphed to his sister this morning, inquiring whether his mother had arrived in Jersey City, and received an answer stating that she had not. The son left town at noon to-day to visit the scene of the disaster and ascertain if his mother is among the victims."
The next day's issue (11 January 1899) confirms her death.
