Newspaper Item — Election Contest Testimony Naming Charles and Arthur Parrish, Shenandoah, 20 October 1897

Transcript

Uncertain readings are marked [?] or set in brackets; words that could not be read are marked as such. Each transcript is shown as written, with its transcriber’s notes.

The record

"Charles Parrish and M. P. Purcell, the latter clerk of elections in the Second ward, were called to testify as to Arthur Parrish, who is now in England, having voted. Both stated the latter voted, but there was no poll book or another record to show the number of his ballot."

Note: the paragraph says Arthur Parrish was "now in England" in October 1897; Arthur is listed among Elizabeth Parrish's children in January 1899 and brought her remains home from New Jersey. The contest itself is not identified in the part of the page transcribed.
