Transcript

Uncertain readings are marked [?] or set in brackets; words that could not be read are marked as such. Each transcript is shown as written, with its transcriber’s notes.

The record

Key: regular type = printed text; bold = handwritten or typed entries; [Stamp] = stamped text; shaded italic = transcriber's note. Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation follow the original.

[Transcriber's note: Sheet 27A of the Fifteenth Census of the United States, 1930, Population Schedule (Form 15-6), for Ward 42, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The sheet has 50 lines. This transcription gives the full header and lines 33 to 40: the Reitter household (lines 37 and 38) and the two households on either side. Lines 1 to 32 and 41 to 50 are not transcribed. A vertical paper flaw or tape runs down the middle of the sheet across lines 24 to 50 and partly obscures the place-of-birth columns.]

[Transcriber's note: A dash at the start of a name stands for "same surname as above." "V" in column 10 on the wife lines is a check mark. The codes in the A B C columns are faint Census Bureau office codes. Class of worker: W = wage or salary worker; E = employer. "WW" in column 31 = World War. The house numbers 1975 to 1969 run in descending order along Elston Street. Line 37 reads: Reitter, Nicholas, head, owns home valued at \$5,900, has a radio, not a farm, male, white, 25, married, first married at 24, did not attend school, reads and writes, born Pennsylvania, father and mother born Germany [as written], speaks English, mechanic, automobiles, wage worker, at work. Line 38: Ruth E., wife, 21, married at 20, born Pennsylvania, both parents born Pennsylvania, no occupation. The enumeration district on the sheet reads "51-1031"; the file name gives "51-1231." The second digit is a looped numeral and could be read either way.]
