\(a\) Dwelling 237?/family 338, line 18: "Martha Jones 50 F, born Penna"; line 19 "Ella do 25 F"; line 20 "Joseph Lonsheetz [Lonsheetz] 50 M, Druggist, Germany"; line 21 "Wilhelm Walter 26 M, Painter, Germany". The three after Martha Jones are in her family; Walter has no real or personal estate entered. He is a painter, one of two non-family adults in a household of two women (age 50 and 25).
\(b\) Dwelling 351/family 367, lines 8–16: "William Walter 33 M, Victualler [reads 'Victualler'], real estate 4000, personal estate 400, Germany; Eliza 33 F, Pa; George 9 M, Pa; Camilla 8 F, Pa; Clara 3 F, Pa; Annie 1 F, Pa; George 63 M, Victualler, Germany [no estate]; Ann Earls 35 F, Servant, Ireland; Frank [Swick?] 27 M, Laborer, Switzerland."
Plain reading
\(a\) a German-born painter, 26, boarding in a Philadelphia household; (b) a German-born victualler (a food seller or innkeeper), 33, owning \$4,000 of real estate, with a wife born in Pennsylvania, four children born in Pennsylvania, his father (also George, 63, a victualler), a Irish servant and a Swiss laborer.
Notes
Neither is tied to the 1866 witness "Wilh. Walter(?)" (PROBABLE at most that either is a candidate; POSSIBLE for (a) since a young unmarried painter fits a baptism or marriage witness; (b) is better established and was married to a Pennsylvania-born wife, no tie to the family). Birthplace in the German states is "Germany" only; neither is placed in Württemberg (the 1860 John Walter of the 20th Ward is the Württemberg-born one).
Conflicts noted: none. The index gave William Walter's household as "Eliza, George, Camilla, Clarra, Annie" and "George Walter 63 Germany"; the image agrees.
