The record

Landeskirchliches Archiv der Evang.-luth. Landeskirche Hannovers, Kirchenkreis Bodenwerder, Linse, Kirchenbuch 1815-1853, Bild 81 (archion.de).

This is written page 194. The reference the project has been carrying as “her death, indexed at page 194” resolves here, in this volume’s deaths section, exactly as predicted. The competing candidate — page 194 of the 1854–1875 volume, which is dual-numbered 194/215 — is excluded: that leaf carries only Georg Ludewig’s death of 1855.

English

1. Waßemann, Hanne Caroline Wilhelmine, born Brand, wife of the cottager and miller Heinrich Christian Ludewig Waßemann of Linse.

Day and hour of death: the twelfth of March, six[?] in the morning.

Day and manner of burial: the fourteenth of March, [conducted?] quietly.

What this entry establishes

  • Her maiden name is given outright: geborene Brand. The 1832 marriage entry is confirmed from the other end of her life, by a different clerk, forty-three years later.
  • The birth date matches her 1809 baptism to the day. Two entries, two parishes, two hands, one woman. This is the strongest identification in the German chapter.
  • George’s mother died on 12 March 1852, when he was thirteen. Chapter 1 should say so plainly; it changes how the household of 1852 to 1860 reads.
  • Her husband is styled Häusling und Müller — cottager and miller — at Linse in 1852. He held the Thran mill as tenant in 1832. By 1852 he is a cottager with no land, and by January 1859 he is a Häusling at Halle. The loss of position happened before 1852, not after.
  • The clerk’s convention holds: she is a married woman, so she is entered with her maiden name in the geborene position and her husband named in full. That is the pattern established across the 1855, 1858 and 1861 entries in the successor volume, and it is why her own death entry was always the document most likely to settle her surname.

Also on this leaf

Written page 194 carries the last entry of 1851 and entries 1 through 4 of 1852; written page 195 carries the last entry of 1852 and the whole of 1853, closing with an attestation. No other Wesemann, Waßemann or Waßmann appears on either leaf. The surrounding households are Lampe, Willmer, Sommer, Görges, Meyer, Eickhoff, Lessing and Falke.
