The record

Landeskirchliches Archiv der Evang.-luth. Landeskirche Hannovers, Kirchenkreis Bodenwerder, Linse, Kirchenbuch 1815-1853, Bild 27 (archion.de).

CORRECTION. The earlier version of this file stated that no transcription was needed for this page. The page carries the 1838 stillbirth entry that the project’s missing-baptism argument rests on, and a Halbrodt godparent in the entry beside it. The household list in the earlier version (Meyer, Sagebiel, Zoel/Zöl, Freise, Görsmann, Lorenz-Halbmeier) does not match the page; the households are Sagebiel, Dorn, Eickhoff, Krahe and a Meiβdaner-form surname, with Halbrodt and Brand in the godparent column.

What is on this page

Written page 46 closes 1838 with entries 8, 9 and 10, then an unnumbered row, then opens 1839 with entries 1 and 2. Written page 47 carries the baptismal names, godparents and remarks for the same rows.

Notes

  • This is the 1838 stillbirth the missing-baptism argument turns on. The clerk recorded a birth for which no baptism ever took place, gave it its own row in the register, entered the birth date and hour, and ruled a line through the godparent column rather than leaving the row out. A parish that records a birth with no baptism attached would not have left six years of a miller’s children off the register entirely.
  • The remarks column establishes the two rows as twins, which is why the stillborn child has no entry number and no baptism date of its own.
  • Ludewig Halbrodt, Mühlenmeisters Sohn, of Linse. Read against Bild 26, where a Halbrodt daughter and a Waßemann daughter are both styled Maschinenmüllers Tochter, this is the Halbrodt mill household documented twice in the same year, in the same village, in the same hand.
  • The two Brand godparents are styled Halbmeyers Söhne, of Linse. The earlier reading of this surname as Lorenz is wrong. Brand is the Halbmeier family at Linse, and this is the same household the 1832 marriage register names.
  • Reading confidence. Halbrodt, Brand, Halbmeyers Sohn, Mühlenmeisters Sohn, Todtgeborener Sohn and the twins remark are read with confidence. The father’s surname reads Dorn but could be argued as Dorf; the mother’s age and the hour of birth are read at working confidence.
