The record

Landeskirchliches Archiv der Evang.-luth. Landeskirche Hannovers, Kirchenkreis Bodenwerder, Linse, Kirchenbuch 1815-1853, Bild 26 (archion.de).

CORRECTION. The earlier version of this file stated that no entry on this page names Wesemann, Wasmann or a spelling variant, and that a possible Wasemann hit had been re-checked and ruled out. That is wrong. Entry 5 of 1838 carries a Waßemann in the godparent column on the facing leaf, written page 45. The surnames listed in the earlier version (Lorenz-Halbmeier, Meyer, Rösly/Wallmüller) do not match the page either; the households here are Sagebiel, Kramer and Kohrs.

What is on this page

Written page 44 carries births and baptisms 2 through 7 of 1838: two Sagebiel entries (Wilhelm Sagebiel, Großköther), an illegitimate birth to Luise Kramer, entry 5 below, a further Sagebiel entry (Heinrich Sagebiel, Halbmeyer), and Georg Kohrs, Schneidermeister. Written page 45 carries the baptismal names, the godparents and the remarks column for the same entries.

German

Kramer, Wilhelm, Viertelmeyer u. Großköther. — Hanne Kühn, acht u. zwanzig Jahr alt. — Vier u. zwanzigste September Morgens Zehn Uhr. — Siebente October. — Tochter: Hanne Luise Wilhelmine.

English

Kramer, Wilhelm, quarter-farmer and cottager. Mother: Hanne Kühn, twenty-eight years old. Born the twenty-fourth of September, ten in the morning. Baptized the seventh of October. A daughter: Hanne Luise Wilhelmine.

Godparents: Heinrich Bürge[?], a full-farmer’s son at Bergstenhagen[?]. Wilhelmine Halbrodt, a machine-miller’s daughter. Luise Waßemann, a machine-miller’s daughter, both of Linse.

Notes

  • Two Maschinenmüller daughters, one Halbrodt and one Waßemann, stand godmother together in the same entry, both described as resident at Linse. This is the two-mill picture stated in a single line by the clerk, and it is the clearest documentary support on this page for two machine-milling households in the village at the same date.
  • The Waßemann sighting falls inside the 1817 to 1848 range of the Luise Waßemann open question. It does not resolve it, because the entry gives her no age, no parents and no given-name qualifier beyond Luise.
  • Reading confidence. Waßemann, Halbrodt and Maschinenmüllers Tochter are read with confidence. The first godparent’s surname and his village are not; both are marked [?] and should not be cited.
  • This is one of the two false negatives already known in the Linse read, images 26 and 27, both from a lighter pass that did not work the godparent column on the second leaf of the spread.
