English translation: 9. Father: Wesemann (underlined in the original), Heinrich Christian Ludewig, mill tenant (Mühlenpächter) at Thran. Child: (son) Georg Wilhelm Ehrenfried. Godparents: 1. Marie Johanne Henriette(?) Wilhelmine Albrecht, née Müller. 2. Georg Alexander(?) Ludewig, mill-master (Mühlenmeister) at Thran. 3. > Why this is the emigrant’s baptism. The birth date and hour — 30 July, two in the afternoon — match George’s emigration record and the January 1860 military dispensation file compiled at Holzminden, neither of which the parish clerk saw. The mother’s stated age of twenty-nine fits her birth on 16 July 1809 to the fortnight. The child’s third given name, Ehrenfried, is the given name of godparent 3, following the sponsor-naming pattern that runs through this family. > > What it settles. The largest open question in the project — if not at Linse, where was George baptized — is answered. Emergency baptism and clerical omission at Linse are both ruled out: this is an ordinary numbered entry on the standing formula with three godparents and a full baptism date. The thirty-four-day interval between birth and baptism is unusual for this family, which baptized its October 1832 daughter two days after birth. > > Note on unresolved readings. Godparent 3’s trade breaks across two lines and the second line ends -ber zu Kemnade; Färber, Schreiber and Weber all fit. Godparent 2 is entered with three given names and no surname, which in this register normally means the surname repeats the father’s at the head of the column; if so this is a Wesemann Mühlenmeister at Thran, and the middle name reads Alexander with a clear descending x. The baptism day reads zweiten on the strength of a single ascender in the word.
Taufen 1838–1842 — Bild 5 (Kemnade, Taufregister, 1838) — Georg Wilhelm Ehrenfried Wesemann
Only the entry involving the Wesemann/Wasmann surname is included below. Uncertain readings are marked (?). The register is ruled in columns: entry number | father | mother | birth | baptism | child and sex | godparents. The family surname is written once, underlined, at the head of the father's column, and is not repeated in the child's column.
