English

On 16 February, to Master Hanß Wasmann, tailor at Halle, [a daughter]. Godparents: Hanß Jürgen Bock of Halle; likewise Ilse Maria, daughter of Krauß at Halle; and Anna Dorothea, daughter of Brachmann, half-holding farmer at Halle. Name: Dorothea Maria.

Notes

> The clearest statement of the tailor household in the batch: Meister Hanß Wasman, Schneider zu Halle. Master craftsman status, not a servant or a labourer. > > The words eine Tochter are interlined above the line, squeezed in over Gevattern. The clerk forgot the child’s sex on the first pass and inserted it afterwards. The child’s name, Dorothea Maria, confirms a daughter. > > Brachmann is entered as Halbmeyer — a half-holding farmer. The tailor is drawing sponsors from the top of Halle’s village hierarchy.
