The Miller's Household at Linse, 1774 to 1801
In the spring of 1774 the Wesemanns moved to Linse, a village of Halle parish in the Brunswick district of Wickensen. On 6 March 1774 “Conrad Dempewulf, middle miller,” had a son baptized at Linse. On 5 June “the widow of Joh. Wilhelm von Campe, from Salzhemmendorf, now in the middle mill with her daughter,” stood godmother there. On 27 October the clerk wrote “Master Johann Heinrich Wäsemann, now leaseholder in the said middle mill”. The family almost certainly took the mill between 6 March and 5 June 1774. Franz Conrad Dempewulff, the miller they replaced, had been the Thran miller in 1768 and probably in 1763, and the middle miller since May 1771; the widow of Conrad Dempewulff died at Linse on 29 September 1803, aged 72. The Dempewulffs were possibly a milling family of the Weser district, but no record links them to the Wesemanns (see The German Mills).
The middle mill (Mittelmühle) belonged to the duke. It was probably the “lord’s mill” of a 1759 description of Linse, which carried the land toll on goods bound for the Weser, and the duke’s Chamber granted it to Johann Heinrich on hereditary rent (Erbenzins) in 1774. The printed description of the Duchy of 1803 says that “the Lenne drives 2 grinding mills, each with 1 grinding and 1 oil run, of which one is let on hereditary rent by the Chamber, the other a hereditary mill”. The mill on hereditary rent was probably the middle mill, the other the upper mill of the village. The history of all three wheels on the lower Lenne is told in the The German Mills section.
Johann Heinrich appears under several titles: hereditary-rent miller (Erbenzinsmüller) at Linse in 1775 to 1788, “the middle miller Heinrich Waßemann” in 1777, master miller (Müllermeister) at Linse in 1791, and master miller of the middle mill at his burial in 1801. They are one man: one mill, one wife and one set of children run through them without a break.
He spent much of his time at Linse in court with his neighbor downstream. From 1775 to 1788 he sued the Thran miller Deneke over a dam built too high. That file is the earliest to name a Wesemann at Linse, and it shows that he held his mill on hereditary rent. In 1791 Johann Friedrich Boerms, by then the Thran miller, sued him in turn over water overflowing, in a file that spells the village “Lünse”. These suits, and the later ones, are told in the The German Mills section.
Johann Heinrich and Christine had six children. The eldest was born at Salzhemmendorf and the other five at Linse, where they were entered in the Halle register.
| Child | Birth | Death | Married |
|---|---|---|---|
| Johann Conrad Ludewig | 17 January 1772, Salzhemmendorf; baptized 21 January | 31 December 1816, Salzhemmendorf (probably); buried 4 January 1817 | Dorothea Louise |
| Ernestine Charlotte | 23 October 1774; baptized 27 October | 29 April 1783, of smallpox, aged 8½; buried 4 May (probably) | |
| Georg Ludewig | 23 June 1777; baptized 26 June | 29 December 1855, Linse | Justine Marie Küster, 1803 |
| Ernst Heinrich | 10 November 1780; baptized 13 November | 20 April 1783, of smallpox, aged 2 years 23 weeks; buried 24 April | |
| Johann Ernst | 28 February 1785; baptized 4 March | Melusine Caroline Beckmann, 1808 | |
| Caroline Louise | 6 January 1789; baptized 11 January | probably 1 March 1851, Heinade | Friedrich Wilhelm Brand, 1807; Johann Ernst Friedrich Seebaum, 1823 |
In the spring of 1783 smallpox came to the mill house. Ernst Heinrich died on 20 April, and nine days later Ernestine Charlotte died between midnight and one in the morning.
The godparents came from the mother’s side and from the district’s officials. Conrad Ludolph Stumpf, the district bailiff (Amtsvogt), stood for Georg Ludewig in 1777 and Ernst Heinrich in 1780, and his wife stood at a Brand baptism that August. Ernst Stumpf, a non-commissioned officer, stood for Johann Ernst in 1785. Both men were entered “of Buchhagen,” a village two kilometers east of Bodenwerder on the Lenne that belonged with fourteen others to the Lower Börde of the district of Wickensen until 1832, was parished to Kirchbrak rather than Bodenwerder because it was Brunswick territory while Bodenwerder was Calenberg, and had its own millrace, now dry. A district bailiff at the font twice says more about the miller’s standing than any other sponsor of these years. Ernestine Charlotte’s first godfather in 1774 was “Ludewig Rumpf, now steward of the noble estate at Buchhagen,” and in October 1788 “the steward’s wife Stumpf of Buchhagen” was a godmother at Linse. Whether Rumpf and Conrad Ludolph Stumpf were one man is not known. The second sponsor at Georg Ludewig’s baptism was “the wife of Jo. Heinr. Wasmann,” of the separate Wasmann family of Linse, which is not part of the milling line.
Three of the children carry forenames that no godparent bore: Ernestine in 1774, Georg in 1777 and Ernst in 1780. Such names often honored a grandparent. Among the Wesemann and Wasmann families of the district, Ernst appears in the Weesemann officials, in Ernst Wasmann, a farm boy in the district of Rotenkirchen in 1689, and among the Wasmanns of Halle parish at Linse in 1606 to 1611 and at Dohnsen in 1679 to 1681. The name may point toward the miller’s own family, but that is a theory, not a finding.
The surnames Wesemann and Brand stood together at a font a generation before the two families married. On 20 August 1777, at the baptism of a daughter of Jo. Wilhelm Brand and Dor. Marie Heinemeier of Kirchbrak, the godparents were “the middle miller Heinrich Waßemann,” the miller Johann Heinr. Brünig and the bailiff Stumpf’s wife. That Brand household belonged to Halle and Kirchbrak, not to the Brand farm at Linse that later married into the family. The miller stood at many fonts. He was a godfather at Halle on 5 November 1775 as “the miller Heinr. Wäsemann,” and Christine was probably the miller’s wife “in the middle mill” who was a godmother at Linse on 16 November 1776. On 4 June 1786 “the miller Wäsemann” was one of four godparents of Marie Louise, daughter of Johann Christoph Wasmann of Linse. At his own daughter Caroline Louise’s baptism in January 1789 the godparents were the innkeeper Settemeier and “Sporleder of Linse, his wife”. Probably he was the “miller Johann Heinrich Wesemann” who was first godfather on 19 September 1798 to Johann Heinrich Wilhelm, son of Heinrich Wilhelm Kramer of Linse, at Kemnade, and “the miller Wesemann from Linse” who stood at Halle on 15 November 1799.
Christine’s widowed mother lived out her life at the mill. Maria Eleonora Küster died there on 25 January 1785, aged 58, and was buried on the 28th. Her Salzhemmendorf kin stayed close: when Christine’s first Linse child was baptized in October 1774, one godmother was “Charlotte, wife of N. Albrecht, citizen of Salzhemmendorf”. She was probably the Charlotta Dorothea Küster baptized at Salzhemmendorf in 1738 who married an Albrecht there in 1762. That she was August Wilhelm Küster’s daughter, and so Christine’s aunt, is a theory: his household fits the Küster entries of the town’s index.
Christine died on 7 September 1791, aged 41 years and 3 months, of consumption. Fourteen months later, on 8 November 1792, the widower married again at Halle: “the widower Johann Heinrich Wesemann, master miller in the middle mill at Linse,” and “Regine Sophie Henrici, surviving widow of the late Johann Schielen, excise collector (Lizenteinnehmer) at Lauenförde”. The banns were read at Lauenförde, the widow’s home, on 21 and 28 October, for “the inhabitant and grinding miller at Linse … widower Johann Heinrich Wü[s]emann and the widow Regina Sophia Schiele, born Henrici”. Neither entry gives the parents, birthplace or age of either party. The Lauenförde banns are almost certainly for the same marriage.
On 25 September 1799, at the baptism of a daughter of the schoolmaster Justus Heinrich Eickhoff at Linse, one godmother was entered as “the miller Wesemann’s daughter” (the last word may also read “widow”), without a name.
In March 1800 the household lost a servant. Louise Wilhelmine Bergmüller, “the miller Wesemann’s maidservant,” born at Bodenwerder, died at Linse on 4 March 1800 of a stroke, aged 32 years and 1 month. She was probably the Catharina Louise Wilhelmina baptized at Bodenwerder on 8 February 1768, born the day before, daughter of Wilhelm Bergmüller and his wife Christina Elisabeth; her father was probably Christian Wilhelm Bergmüller, mill tenant at Bodenwerder, who was dead by July 1791. She was a miller’s daughter in service in another miller’s house.
Johann Heinrich Wesemann died at Linse on 22 December 1801 of a chest illness (Brustkrankheit), aged 65 by the register, entered as “master miller of the middle mill” (Mühlenmeister).
His widow outlived him by almost thirty years. The widow Wesemann who stood godmother at Linse in 1804 was probably Regine Sophie. She was probably also the “widow Wasmann, Regina born Henrici, widow of the late hereditary-rent miller Johann Heinrich Wasmann” who died at Linse in the evening of [4?] February 1830 of old age and frailty, aged 89 years, [9?] months and 25 days, and was buried quietly on 12 February. That age puts her birth about 1740, and her forename and maiden name agree with the marriage of 1792.
His estate was divided between his sons Georg Ludewig and Johann Ernst by a contract of 18 August 1818, with a supplement of 3 December 1819. The contract (Erbvertrag) itself has not been found. It is known only from a summary in a mortgage bond of 1822, which quotes Georg Ludewig on “my brother the miller Ernst Wesemann”. It is the only record of what Johann Heinrich left and to whom. Like the grant file of 1774, it could state where he came from.
A second man of the same forenames lived at Linse in these years and must be kept apart from the miller. Johann Heinrich Wasmann, of the separate Wasmann family, was a retired farmer (Leibzüchter) at Linse, born about 1729, who died there on 29 November 1805 aged 76. As a bachelor of Tuchtfeld, the surviving son of the late Harm Christoph Wasmann, he had married on 10 May 1759 at Linse Marie Sophie née Marahrens, widow of the half farmer Heinrich Harm Sagebiel. Their son Johann Georg Christian, born on 27 June 1764, died on 6 July 1785. His later wife was Ilse Margrete Hundertmark, who died at Linse on 24 June 1800 aged 77. The register keeps the two men apart by spelling as well as trade: the miller is Wesemann, the retired farmer Waßmann. The Linse clerk of the 1790s wrote the miller’s household Wesemann every time and every other household Waßmann, and a third man of the name, Johann Heinrich Wasmann, a musketeer of Halle, was named the father of an illegitimate son in 1798. Marie Sophie Marahrens returns later in this chapter as a possible ancestor of George’s mother.
