The Children Who Left Linse
Only one son could have the middle mill. Georg Ludewig took it; his brother and sister, and the eldest brother, made their lives elsewhere.
Johann Conrad Ludewig Wesemann (1772 to 1816). The eldest son was born at Salzhemmendorf on 17 January 1772 and baptized on the 21st. His godparents were Wilhelm Campen, his mother’s father, Conr. Albrecht, and the miller Ludewig Küster. “Conrad Wesemann” was a godfather at Linse on 15 March 1789, aged 17, and probably again on 25 April 1793, aged 21. He went back to his mother’s town and settled there as a town councillor (Rathsherr) and tenant of the lordship’s mill at Salzhemmendorf. When the acting treasurer Grimme died on 23 March 1814, the district office gave the town treasury to “Councillor Wesemann,” “tenant of the lordship’s mill,” who had been elected over Councillor [Andreas?] Conrad Albrecht by one vote. He was appointed on 23 April 1814 against a security of [six?] hundred thaler. “The treasurer (Cämmerer) Johann Conrad Ludwig Wesemann” died on 31 December, aged 46, and was buried on 4 January 1817. The district’s papers place his death at the turn of 1816 to 1817, and his successor was elected on 11 February 1817. The register’s age is two years more than his baptism gives. That the treasurer was the miller’s eldest son is probable: every record fits, though none names his parents.
His wife was Dorothea Louise. Her surname is written with the ending -meier in 1800 and as Riekmann or Rickmann in 1804 and 1828, and its first letter may also be read P or F. She was not of Salzhemmendorf, so the couple probably married in her parish, which is not known, and their marriage, the record most likely to name the miller as Conrad’s father, has not been found. A baptism at Oldendorf on 19 January 1783 of Engel Dorothea Justine Louise, born on 15 January, daughter of “Johan Hinrich Richman in Arenfeld” and Catrina Maria Grünewald, is a weak candidate for her. A Dorothea Richmann of Ahrenfeld, daughter of Heinrich Riechmann and Marie Grünewald, married the widower Johann Heinrich Marahrens at Deinsen on 10 October 1815 and was buried there as his widow in 1851; if she was the child of 1783, she was single while Conrad was still alive. The candidate is possible, and weak. Conrad’s widow died at Salzhemmendorf on 14 November 1832 and was buried on the 18th, of dropsy of the chest; the entry gives no forename and no age.

| Sophie Charlotte | 5 October 1800, Salzhemmendorf; baptized 12 October | 1857 | Heinrich Friedrich Conrad Albrecht, 29 September 1822 |
| Dorothea Caroline | 2 October 1802, Salzhemmendorf; baptized the same day | October 1802, aged one day (probably) | |
| Caroline Louise | 31 March 1804, Salzhemmendorf; baptized 8 April | Christian Albrecht, 27 January 1828 | |
| Antoinette Henriette (probably of this couple) | Wilhelm Conrad Leopold Heinemeier, 3 August 1817; Christian Bähr[?], about 26 July 1840 |
The marriages of 1822 and 1828 name the bride’s father as the late treasurer Conrad Wesemann. At the baptism of 1804 the godmother was “Miss Louise Wesemann from Linse,” probably the miller’s daughter, the household’s tie to Linse.
Antoinette Henriette Wesemann married Wilhelm Conrad Leopold Heinemeier, a citizen of Salzhemmendorf, there on 3 August 1817. As his widow she married Christian Bähr[?] of Marienhagen, son of the late full farmer Heinrich David Bähr[?], about 26 July 1840. Neither entry gives her age or parents. She was not baptized at Salzhemmendorf, nor at Halle in 1790 to 1799, so she was not a late child of the miller, and Conrad was probably her father. Her first husband appears as a full farmer, Wilhelm Heinemeier, in the Hemmendorf burial of their daughter in 1886. That daughter, Dorothe Caroline Charlotte Heinemeyer, born about 27 March 1823, married the coal assessor Heinrich Karl Julius Dahle of Osterwald at Hemmendorf on 1 October 1846 and was buried there on 28 October 1886. Antoinette was alive on 6 May 1855, when “Antoinette …, born Wesemann, of Salzhemmendorf” was godmother to her Dahle granddaughter at Hemmendorf. A Heinemeier family lived at Linse in the 1790s: Henriette Heinemeier was a godmother there in March 1797, and Johanne Marie Henriette Heinemeier bore a daughter there in April 1798. Her husband’s family possibly came from Linse. An online tree gives Antoinette a second daughter, Caroline Henriette Amalie Louise Heinemeyer, born on 5 November 1832; this is possible, and unverified.
Johann Ernst Wesemann and the Bodenwerder town mill. Johann Ernst, born at Linse on 28 February 1785, was the first of the children whose baptism calls his father “the miller”. Two kilometers from Linse, across the border in Hanoverian Bodenwerder, he became a mill holder himself. As “master miller Johann Ernst Wesemann” he bought the Bodenwerder town mill at public auction on 6 October 1807 for 2,000 thaler in coin, on hereditary rent from 1 January 1808, and on 23 December 1807 he signed the contract himself as “Johann Ernst Wäsemann,” the family’s own spelling. He was 22 at the auction; the archive’s file runs from 1803 to 1841, which would make him 18 at the date of the grant it records. The outgoing tenant was a Dempewulff. In November 1808 the banns of “the local citizen, miller and brewer Johann Ernst Wesemann” and “Miss Caroline Melusine Bechmann [Beckmann?] from Lünden [Linden?]” were read at Bodenwerder on the 6th and 13th, and the wedding was held at Lünden on 17 November. He stood godfather to his brother Georg Ludewig’s sons at Linse in 1811 and possibly again in 1814.

| Heinrich Conrad Ludewig | 27 March 1814, Bodenwerder; baptized 10 April | ||
| Dorette Wilhelmine Ernestine | 24 August 1816, Bodenwerder; baptized 8 September |
At his son’s baptism Johann Ernst is styled “band-miller here” (Bandmüller). Neither child is traced past baptism. The mill went badly. By the mid-1820s Johann Ernst was living at Hameln and holding the mill from a distance, subletting it first to Heinrich Kenzer of Hämelschenburg and then to a tenant written “Sebohm,” probably his brother-in-law Johann Ernst Friedrich Seebaum, whose rent lapsed. The mill’s accounts for 1824 to 1825 are headed “Miller Ernst Wesemann in Hameln,” and in May 1824 “the master miller Johann Ernst Wesemann of Hameln” stood godfather to one of Seebaum’s twins at Bodenwerder. The mill left the family in financial distress about 1826. By 1828 the 2,000-thaler price stood as an unpaid debt and a forced sale was under discussion, and the later holders were Ficker from 1826, Bedecker in 1838 and Bunge in 1839. Where and when Johann Ernst died is not known.
Caroline Louise Wesemann (1789 to 1851). The miller’s only surviving daughter was born at Linse on 6 January 1789 and baptized on the 11th. On 28 April 1807 she married at Halle “the retired farmer Friedrich Wilhelm Brand of Linse,” entered with “the miller Wesemann’s daughter at Linse, Caroline Louise Wesemann,” with no guardian and no age. He was almost certainly a master tanner, and the groom of 1807 was probably the tanner of Bodenwerder. “Wilhelm Brand, citizen and master tanner here,” was found dead on the evening of 3 September 1814 “in the Lenne by the ford,” apparently fallen from the high bank, and was buried quietly on 6 September, aged 32. As the tanner’s widow she was a godmother to two of her brother Georg Ludewig’s daughters at Linse, in March 1817 and February 1820.
She stayed at Bodenwerder, where the family’s town mill stood. On 23 October 1818 she bore a son, Johann Ernst Friedrich, whose father was named as Heinrich Rittmeyer, a hand at the Bodenwerder mill. His godfather was “the local miller Johann Ernst [Steinbrück(?)],” whose forenames fit both her brother and Seebaum, and the child carried Seebaum’s three forenames; which man stood is not known. On 22 May 1820 she bore a daughter, Hanne Louise Caroline, whose father was named as Johann Ernst Friedrich Seebaum. Seebaum was “the local miller” in 1820 and a mill hand, and possibly a cooper (the word is unclear), at the Bodenwerder mill in April 1824. On 24 November 1823 she married him at Bodenwerder, the banns read there and at Halle. The entry calls him “master miller and tenant of the local mill,” born in the principality of Hildesheim, son of the late [water?] miller Christian Heinrich Seebaum; the record of the marriage also calls him a lodger (Häusling). An outside compilation gives his birth as 1789 at Almstedt; the 1823 entry’s village begins “Am-”. Her own parents are named in the entry as “the late master miller Heinrich Wesemann of Linse and his wife Christine, born Küster, also deceased”. Twin sons followed in 1824. Their sponsors included “Justine Marie Wesemann, born Küster, wife of the master miller Ludewig Wesemann of Linse” and “the master miller Johann Ernst Wesemann of Hameln”. Seebaum was probably the subtenant through whom Johann Ernst held the Bodenwerder mill, and Rittmeyer had been a hand at the same mill. Seebaum died at Wangelnstedt on 18 February 1826, the year the mill left the family, and his last son was born there six months later. The 1840 margin of that son’s baptism names his mother “Caroline Louise, born Wesemann,” born at Linse.
| Child | Birth | Death | Married |

| Johann Ernst Friedrich | 23 October 1818, Bodenwerder | ||
| Hanne Louise Caroline | 22 May 1820, Bodenwerder | ||

| Ernst Friedrich Wilhelm Seebaum (twin) | 19 April 1824, Bodenwerder; baptized 9 May | ||
| Carl Gustav Theodor Seebaum | 26 August 1826, Wangelnstedt |
Heinrich August Ludewig Seebaum is traced to Glesse on 18 February 1898; his twin is not traced past baptism.
Caroline Louise probably died at Heinade on 1 March 1851, at five in the morning, “Louise Caroline Seebaum born Wesemann, surviving widow of the miller Ernst Seebaum who died at Wangelnstedt,” of gout and exhaustion, and was buried quietly on 4 March. The burial gives her birth as 15 December 1785 at Linse, but the register notes that its names rest on what the family told the clerk, and that date is probably the informant’s mistake.
Two who are not placed. On 12 March 1797 “Johann Heinrich Ludewig Wesemann … from Linse” stood godfather, his forenames written out in full. No son of the miller was baptized with those names, so he is either a son otherwise unknown or a clerk’s slip for Georg Ludewig or Johann Conrad Ludewig; the question is open. “Louise Wesemann of Linse” was a godmother three times in Halle’s register, about 1806, about 1807 and on 9 November 1810, always under her own name, as an unmarried woman would be. She probably belonged to the Linse household as an unmarried daughter or sister of Georg Ludewig’s generation, but she is not placed.
