The Sautter, Schmid and Haidle Families
The smith’s trade runs through Caroline’s mother’s side. Her mother’s father, one of her mother’s grandfathers and both of her mother’s husbands were smiths, and so was the first husband of her mother’s grandmother.
Eva Catharina Sautter was born at Ochsenburg on 29 March 1754, at about one in the morning, the first of twin girls. Her twin, Christina Elisabetha, died on 3 April, five days old. Their father, Johann Ulrich Sautter, is written as what may be “Sternwirth,” keeper of the Star inn. Their mother was Margretha, whose maiden name may be Pferschig, of what may be Flehingen. Later records call Johann Ulrich the administrator of the local office (Amts-Verweser) and, in words hard to read, a member of the local administration (Amts-Verwandter). Margretha died in 1766 and Johann Ulrich in 1787. The compiled report carries an Autenheimer, Sautter and Goeringer generation above Eva Catharina, including a Sautter and Goeringer marriage of 2 July 1754.
On 9 November 1773 Eva Catharina married Jacob Friedrich Autenheimer, a church warden and smith, at Ochsenburg. They had six children between 1774 and 1788, and he died on 17 January 1790. On 6 September 1790 she married Johann Andreas Schmid, a single man and court smith. The next summer she bore twin daughters, Christiana and Catharina, baptized on the day they were born, 9 July 1791. The entry calls the mother Catharina, the daughter of the late Johann Ulrich Sautter, and she was probably the same woman. A Christiana Schmid died on 8 September 1791, two months old less a day, and was buried on the 11th; she was probably the twin. Two more daughters followed: Friderike, born on 1 November 1795, and Elisabetha Carolina, born on 8 February 1799, who died on 22 April. Eva Catharina died at Ochsenburg on 7 April 1815 and was buried on 10 April.
Johann Andreas Schmid was not from Ochsenburg. He was born at Ehningen, near Böblingen, on 27 November 1757 and baptized the same day, the son of Bernhard Schmid, a butcher, and Barbara née Widmann. The Ochsenburg family registers give the same birth, naming his parents as Johann Bernhard Schmid, butcher at Ehningen in the district of Böblingen, and Barbara Widmann of Ehningen, so the Ehningen baptism is almost certainly his. His father died in 1787 and his mother in 1792. At Ehningen on 2 June 1739 Hanß Bernhard, son of Hanß Jerg Schmid, married Anna Barbara, daughter of Johann Jacob Widmann; this groom was probably Johann Andreas’s father. Johann Andreas became a citizen and master smith at Ochsenburg and had served as a magistrate by the end of his life. He died there on 20 June 1840. The compiled report gives Catharina an Ochsenburg Schmid ancestry running back to Thomas Seemanns, born at Leonbronn in 1625. That line belongs to another Schmid family of the village, since her father came from Ehningen.
Caroline’s grandfather Johann Georg Haidle came to Ochsenburg from Unterberken, in the parish of Adelberg near Schorndorf, where he was born and baptized on 15 October 1792. He was the son of Johann Jacob Haidle, a weaver, and Anna Maria Hohl, who had married at Adelberg on 8 November 1791. Johann Jacob Haidle was born at Unterberken on 22 February 1766, the son of Jacob Haidle, a weaver, and Rosina Blaser. He died on 18 September 1826; the family sheet says he fell dead of a stroke on his way home from the market at Lorch. Anna Maria Hohl was born at Oberberken on 2 February 1767, the daughter of Johann Hohl, a citizen and farmer there, and Sibylla Margaretha, probably née Sieber. She died at Unterberken on 9 April 1828.
The typed family book of Unterberken carries the generation above. Jacob Haidle, born about 1730, was the son of Christian Haidle, a citizen and day laborer at Hohengehren, and his wife, Anna Barbara. He worked as a weaver, though the family sheet calls him a day laborer. On 15 February 1763 he married Christina Rosina Blaser, born on 19 December 1723, the daughter of Hans Michael Blaser, a mason at Unterberken, and the widow of Matthäus Mayer (the surname a doubtful reading), a day laborer, whom she had married in 1752. Jacob died on 24 November 1791, sixteen days after his son’s wedding, and Christina Rosina died a widow on 7 June 1796. Sibylla Margaretha was the daughter of Martin Sieber, a farmer at Oberberken.
Johann Georg was the eldest of six. His brothers and sisters were Maria Katharina (1795 to 1799), Johannes (1798 to 1799), Johannes (1800 to 1804), Johann Melchior and Maria Katharina (1808 to 1814). Johann Melchior, born on 18 November 1805, married Anna Maria Nagel of Breech on 22 July 1827 and died on 29 August 1852.
On 19 August 1816 Catharina Schmid, then 25, gave birth at Ochsenburg to twin sons, Jacob Friederich and Johann Andreas. Johann Georg Haidle, then a journeyman smith, acknowledged himself their father, and Catharina’s unmarried sister, Friderike Schmid, stood godmother as their aunt. The babies died on 24 and 25 August. On 10 December 1816 the couple were granted a dispensation for being under age, and on 5 February 1817 they married in the parsonage at Ochsenburg. The Latin entry is partly hard to read, but it probably gives the bride’s birth as 9 July 1791 and her parents as Andreas Schmid, citizen and master smith, and Eva Catharina née Sautter. Johann Georg became a citizen and master smith at Ochsenburg. Their family page lists ten children born between 1816 and 1832.

|---|---|---|---|
| Jacob Friederich (twin) | 19 August 1816, Ochsenburg | 24 or 25 August 1816 | |

| Christiane Regine | 11 June 1820 | 3 September 1834 | |
| Caroline Friederike | 30 October 1822 | 31 May 1823 | |
| Christian Gottlob | 21 December 1823 | 27 May 1824 | |
| Catharina Friederica | 31 May 1825 | 10 August 1825 | |

| Auguste Charlotte | 9 November 1829, Ochsenburg; baptized 13 November | 11 March 1859, Ochsenburg | Johannes Reichert, 16 November 1847; Johann Weiss, 16 November 1851 |
| Johanna Juliana | 1 August 1832 | 15 April 1833 |
Six of the ten died as infants. Johann Jacob, a journeyman smith, died unmarried at 25, and Christiane Regine at 14. Only Katharina and Auguste Charlotte married, and none of the ten lived to thirty. Johann Georg Haidle died at Ochsenburg on 16 May 1833, aged 40, and was buried on 18 May. Catharina died there on 1 December 1845, aged 54, and was buried on 4 December. Auguste Charlotte was three when her father died and sixteen when she lost her mother.
